Travel Adventures

Travel Adventures is a Shepherd’s Center program designed to offer active seniors the opportunity to travel together on comfortable chartered buses to locations in the southeast. The trips are open to any adult in the Charlotte community. The tours are led by SCC volunteer leaders who help plan the trips. Travel Adventures offer about 12 trips during the year to various destinations. Knowing the diverse interests of seniors, the committee plans trips to appeal to a wide audience. Past trips include favorite theaters for performances, beautiful gardens throughout the state, historical tours, museums and winery tours. The restaurants selected are unique and help make the experience delicious.

Register early! Our trips fill quickly. Please complete the Travel Registration Form and send with a check made payable to The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte. Trip costs are priced per person.

Activity Level: Our trips are planned for active adults and may require a lot of walking. We have rated our trips by activity level.
1-easy
2-moderate
3-active
If you have a disability that limits your independence, you must be accompanied by a companion. We regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs.  All trip participants are expected to carry information about medical conditions, medications and medical insurance providers. The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte is not liable for individuals who may become ill or injured on Travel Adventures trips.

Parking: Trips leave from Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211. PLEASE NOTE: Our parking area has changed! Please park in the front of the church, in the area close to the back of the church where the road turns the corner – look for the bus! Do NOT park in the horseshoe-shaped parking area in front of the new main entrance to the church.

Cancellations:
Day Trips—If cancelled 45 days prior to the trip date, a credit for a future trip will be given. After the 45-day grace period, if a substitute is found, that person will pay the trip cost and a credit for a future trip will be issued to the original traveler. No cash refunds.
Overnight trips: Deposits are nonrefundable. Once final payment is received and the rooming list is submitted, there can be no refunds.

Please note:  The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte reserves the right to change venues, restaurants, plays, etc. if necessary. Trips must be paid for at least 21 days prior to departure to guarantee the charter buses. For your convenience, trips may be charged to a credit card IF the amount is $100.00 or more. Call the office (704-365-1995) for more information.

**NEW POLICY** Payment is due at the time of registration. Most of the time the SCC must prepay for tickets, admission, bus, etc. When your name is added to the registration list, it is done in good faith that you expect to go and payment is forthcoming. Unfortunately, we have recently experienced people signing up, not paying, then cancelling nearly at the last minute, after everything has already been arranged. Effective immediately, no registration is considered complete until payment has been received. A courtesy reminder call will be made. Anyone with an outstanding balance when event numbers must be confirmed will be removed from the reservation list.

DAY TRIPS

You’ll practically hear Aunt Bee calling, “Andy!” when we travel to Andy Griffith’s home town of Mt. Airy, NC. Frequently referenced on “The Andy Griffith Show”, Mt. Airy boasts the Andy Griffith Museum, Floyd’s Barber Shop, and the Snappy Lunch Counter, where Andy ate as a boy. Our trip will take us to the historic home of Gertrude Smith, a prominent interior designer, followed by lunch (on your own) at the Snappy Lunch Counter. After lunch, we’ll tour the Andy Griffith Museum (with the Siamese Twins exhibit in the building’s basement), before heading home. Depart Trinity Church at 9:00 AM, return at 4:00 PM. Cost: $60.00 for Savvy Senior members, $65 for nonmembers. Activity Level 2.

The spider lilies will be in full bloom during our visit to Landsford Canal State Park. Enjoy these beautiful flowers along with a picnic box lunch, a tour of the museum and perhaps a hike to the overlook area. The hike is 3/4 mile over flat partially paved path, with benches along the way. A pair of bald eagles will be teaching their fledging chicks to fish and fly – hopefully they’ll put on a show for us. If you’re not a hiker, you can enjoy the weather sitting in the picnic shelter overlooking the canal. Cost includes lunch and park/museum admission. Leave SCC at 10:00 AM and return about 3:30 PM. Cost is $55 for Savvy Seniors members, $60 for nonmembers. Activity Level 3.
