Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)

The Shepherd's Center has trained volunteers available to discuss and explain Medicare, Medicare Supplements, Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage through its SHIIP (State Health Insurance Information Program) program. Medicare plays a key role in providing health and financial security, covering many basic health services, including hospital stays, physician services, and prescription drugs.

Tax Filing
Assistance Program 

For the past 25 years, the Shepherd's Center of Charlotte has partnered with AARP to provide tax filing assistance free of charge. From February to April we serve countless seniors, particularly those with lower to moderate income, with our free tax preparation. This is a valuable community service that furthers our shared mission of helping seniors.

Essential
Transportation Services 

About 600,000 older adults stop driving each year, according to the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. That can make it harder to make doctor's appointments, shop for necessities, or attend social events. And that increases their isolation, negatively affecting their health and well-being. All rides are provided by volunteers free of charge. Transportation is available within all Mecklenburg County ZIP codes.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Individuals must be aged 55 years or older.

  • Enrollees should reside in Mecklenburg County, and appointments are required to be within the same county.

  • A notification period of at least 5 business days prior to the appointment is necessary.

  • Our transportation services are predominately offered by our volunteers, and as a result, rides cannot be guaranteed in all cases.

  • Regrettably, we are unable to provide accommodations for wheelchair users, although we typically can make arrangements for other portable medical equipment.
