$55.00 Savvy Senior members / $60.00 nonmembers

The Columbia Museum of Art is a popular tourist destination, and Shepherd’s Center travelers will enjoy the exhibits there on Tuesday, February 20. The museum is currently undergoing renovations, but there is still plenty to see. We’ll arrive late morning, have a docent-led tour of the Kress Galleries. Samuel Kress (of the five-and-dime store fame) amassed one of the most superb collections of European old master paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts ever assembled through the efforts of one individual. Eighteen hundred works were donated to establish the National Gallery, and an additional 1300 were distributed to 18 cities in the US. The Columbia Museum of Art received two large gifts of Renaissance, Baroque and 18th-century art. The Museum’s renowned Kress Collection includes 77 Old Master Renaissance and Baroque paintings and decorative arts. Of particular note: a rare Nativity fresco by Sandro Botticelli, Venetian scenes by Giovanni Antonio Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, and Bernardo Bellotto, and works by Ribera, Bernardo Strozzi, Boucher, and Tintoretto. The tour will be followed by lunch (on your own) at the nearby East Bay Deli. Cost is $55 for Savvy Senior members, and $60 for nonmembers. Depart Trinity Church at 9:00 am; return at 4:00 pm.  Activity Level: 2
