History: The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte has been serving seniors in Mecklenburg County for 32 years. By providing programs and services to seniors to keep them active & healthy, the organization has contributed to the community by keeping seniors engaged in activities and connected to others.
The Shepherd’s Center offers meaningful volunteer work, social interaction and education for active older adults. For less able seniors, services are available that help seniors living independently at home. The Shepherd’s Center has over 400 volunteers and four (4) staff people implementing all programs. Older adults volunteer in office, provide handyman services, transport older adults to appointments, act as instructors, serve on committees, provide tax services, are SHIIP volunteers and above all participate in programs.
Shepherd’s Center is governed by a fifteen member Board of Directors. It receives support from local faith-based groups as well as funding from businesses, foundations and individuals.

What we do: Programs and services provided by Shepherd’s Center mobilize active older adults as volunteers, encourage learning and fellowship, and enable older adults to be active and enjoy living in their own homes for as long as possible. Shepherd’s Center programs follow the lifelong learning model providing participants with an intellectually stimulating experience in an atmosphere of friendship.
Volunteers: The Shepherd’s Center relies on the time and talent of volunteers to accomplish its vital work. Volunteers work in the office, teach classes, serve on planning committees, counsel individuals and couples on Medicare options, drive seniors to their medical appointments, provide minor repairs, serve on the board and help with special events.
Everyone is affected by aging and the vision of Shepherd’s Centers all over the U.S. is to promote the concept of “Seniors Serving Seniors”. Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte provides the programs and services to turn this vision into reality.
Scholarship Program: Scholarships are available through Shepherd’s Center’s for older adults whose funds are limited. These scholarships cover the cost of the Adventures in Learning and Computer Class registration fees for persons who qualify.
